MAKE EVERY WORD COUNT.......
Even though you might only be applying for part time work it is vital that you pay attention to detail and make every application the best it can be.
A local employer who advertised through the JobShop provided us with this feedback about the CVs they had received for a part time bar staff role:
“I was surprised at the lack of grammar, capital letters and punctuation in many of the applications. Some CVs were exceptionally long and many of the emails had spelling mistakes. Some applicants seemed only interested in what the benefits were rather than trying to sell themselves for the job – needless to say, these people were not offered an interview. We did receive some good applications and CVs but I do think it might be useful for you to let your students know that ones with errors went straight in the bin!”
There is a fantastic Careers Centre available to you at this University, which is staffed by very friendly, knowledgeable experts who can make sure how brilliant you are is reflected in your applications and CVs.
How to give your CV the X factor
A Careers Consultant writes……
If you watched the ‘X Factor’ you will have seen the less than kind comments judges make about some of the acts they see : presentation, style and how the performer gets the message across all come in for some pointed comments.
Employers also make exactly the same comments when they receive CVs and covering letters from students who respond to job ads.
A 2007 survey of 260 companies reported on the ‘Personnel Today’ website also showed that almost half of all CVs received contained grammatical mistakes and more than one-quarter included some sort of error or typo.
The worst offenders? People aged 21-25
The worst offence? Not using a spell checker and failing to proof read your text.
So, the Careers Centre’s advice is to imagine what an employer who thinks like Simon or Louis would say when they read your CV. Would they say ‘You have got it all – you are going through” or would they give you the thumbs down?
Writing a CV really isn’t rocket science and the Careers Centre offers a range of resources to help get it right:
• The Careers Centre’s Job Application pack with sample CVs and a checklist is available at http://resources.glos.ac.uk/departments/careers/students/applications/index.cfm
• The online service can be used to get feedback on your CV - this fast and popular service has now been used by over 1300 students.
• We offer appointments at the Careers Centre and on each campus if you would rather get that feedback in person.
Remember with a CV, there is no public vote to save you - only one chance to prove you might have what it takes!
