Students Come Up With Police Campaign

Thursday November 17, 2009

Students from the University of Gloucestershire have devised a marketing campaign for police in Cheltenham.

It was part of a project for second year students on the BA Public Relations course at the University of Gloucestershire.

The students were given a brief in October to come up with a suitable campaign to support the Government’s Safe Sensible Social initiative relating to alcohol.

On Tuesday December 8 2009 students attended Police Headquarters in Waterwells in Quedgeley for the presentations.

A panel from Gloucestershire Constabulary along with Mr Ryan West, area manager for JD Wetherspoon, who sponsored the awards, listened to five different presentations.

The winning group was Laura O’Brien, Lauren Stoodley, Megan Weavers and Diana Urbaite.

They can up with an initiative that involved an online advent calendar offering new promotions on different days in the run up to Christmas.

The promotions, in the form of money-off vouchers, would only be accessible if you correctly answered a relevant health, social or crime prevention based question.

The web page would also promote the relevant issues and risks involved with drinking excessive alcohol.

Inspector Boyles said "It was a wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with the students of the University of Gloucestershire and use their different perspectives and creativity to full effect.

“We have gained a great many new ideas, some of which we will hopefully put into effect in the future."

Gloucestershire Constabulary Joins Facebook

Thursday November 26, 2009

Gloucestershire Constabulary is hoping to connect with a new audience following the launch of its own Facebook pages this morning.

Visitors to the pages will have access to the latest local police news and appeals, as well as information on events and initiatives in their area.

Users will also be able to view films covering different facets of Gloucestershire Constabulary work and link to their local policing team or crime statistics in their neighbourhood.

Ivor Twydell, Assistant Chief Constable, Corporate Services, said: “Social media is now such a vital part of everyday life, joining Facebook and using its power to connect with the people of Gloucestershire made total sense.

“As we have committed to in our Policing Pledge, it’s our role to let people know about crime and the way we are tackling it in their area. Doing this is one way of fulfilling that.

“It gives us a ready-made platform to engage with those audiences who may not have been interested in the police in the past and is a tool that will help us provide information in a new and exciting way.

“In particular, the video content, which we are hoping to update regularly, will give visitors a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our work so they can better understand how we operate. Looking into the future, we're hoping to post filmed press conferences and appeals on there as well.”

Those who wish to visit the pages need to sign up to Facebook at www.facebook.com and search for Gloucestershire Constabulary.

Members of the public can sign up to become a fan of the organisation and choose to receive updates from Gloucestershire Constabulary on their own Facebook pages.

PCSO Moves Into University

Thursday August 15, 2009

A Police Community Support Officer is being given a permanent home at the University of Gloucestershire.

From Thursday October 15 2009, the Students’ Union is giving PCSO Ross Nicholl an office at their Park Campus in Cheltenham.

PCSO Nicholl thinks it is a great opportunity. He said: “We have very close links with the University and this is a great opportunity to build on this.

“I hope that my presence there will be reassuring and useful for the students.

“They can come and talk to me about any policing issues or concerns they may have.

“I can offer them vital crime reduction advice as well as tips about how to keep safe when they are out and about in the town.”

The Students’ Union has been working closely with Gloucestershire Constabulary for a number of years, from joint liaising with community groups, to running a stand at Freshers’ Fayre for the last ten years.

Ian Pain, General Manager of the SU, said: “Having a PSCO on site will give students the chance to voice any concerns or events which they may not feel worth reporting otherwise.

“We’re delighted to have PCSO Nicholl on board and look forward to working with him.”

PCSO Nicholl will be there for a set time every day that he is on duty. The times will be advertised locally as well as on the Constabulary website.

"This is not just for students.” PCSO Nicholl added: “Members of the public are welcome to pop along and see me as well, check the website for when I will be there.”

Leckhampton SCT Plan To Launch ‘Campus Watch’

Thursday August 20, 2009

Officers from the Leckhampton Police Safer Community Team (SCT) are organising a new scheme to help keep students in the town even safer.

On the Monday, August 17, officers from the Leckhampton SCT visited Salford University in Manchester to learn about a scheme that the University has in place to help reduce crime.

The officers met with Christine Rice who is Campus Watch Manger for the University. ‘Campus Watch’ works in a similar way to Neighbourhood Watch but is designed especially for universities. It is intended to fulfil the same role as Neighbourhood Watch by bringing staff and students together to help create a safer campus.

The officers were encourage by the achievements of Salford University’s scheme, which covers 150 acres of land, 59 individual buildings and 22,000 people, and plan to organise a similar initiative for the University of Gloucestershire.

PCSO Ross Nicholl from the SCT said, “Visiting the University and hearing about the initiative was incredibly beneficial and we very thankful to the staff at Salford University for taking the time to tell us about it.

”The scheme has really help reduce the fear of crime within the Salford University, but most importantly has improved relationships between, staff students, local residents and police. We think a similar scheme would be very beneficial to students, staff and residents in Cheltenham and hope to bring Campus Watch to the university of Gloucestershire very soon.”

Campus Watch will be run by volunteers, a mixture of students, staff and local residents, all with the same aim of protecting the University campuses and those who use it. These volunteers will help promote crime prevention techniques to those on campus as well as providing the police with vital information about suspicious incidents and crimes and encouraging others to do the same.

A spokeswoman from the University of Gloucestershire said, “The University has an excellent relationship with Gloucestershire Police, established over many years. We’re keen to work together on future projects, such as Campus Watch that will contribute to student safety in the county.”

Christine Rice Campus Watch Manager for Salford University said, ''We were delighted to welcome the officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary on Monday August, 17 who came to see how the Campuswatch scheme is managed on the Salford University Campus, with an idea to possibly recommend setting up something similar in the Colleges and Universities in the Gloucestershire area.''

Anyone who would like to learn more about Campus Watch and how to get involved is asked to contact PCSO Ross Nicholl on 0845 090 1234 or by sending him an e-mail using the form on the SCT’s webpage at www.gloucestershire.police.uk
