► Domestic Violence

Are You a Victim of Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is much more common than most people realise. Even if you're not experiencing it yourself you may know someone who is.

People often associate domestic violence with couples that may be married or cohabitating, but domestic violence can affect anyone, within all kinds of intimate relationships, be they same sex or heterosexual, living together or apart, whether the person suffering at the hand of the abuser is male or female, or if it's a child being violent towards a parent.

People suffer domestic violence requardless of their social group, class, age, race, disability, sexuality and lifestyle. The abuse can begin at any time - in new relationships or after many years spent together.

Domestic Violence includes physical assault, sexual abuse, rape and threats. It may also include destructive criticism, pressure tactics, disrespect, breaking trust, isolation and harassment.

Getting Help

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, the most important thing you can do is tell someone. Domestic violence is a crime and there are a number of agencies working together to wipe out and prevent that crime.

In an emergency you should call the police on 999.

Otherwise there are local and national agencies you can contact for advice and support:

Gloucestershire Domestic Violence Support and Advocacy Project - 01452 500115

Women's Aid - 0808 2000 247

Refuge - 0808 2000 247

Male Advice Line - 0845 064 6800

Broken Rainbow (LGBT violence forum) - 08452 60 44 60 or
0300 999 LGBT (5428)

(This allows callers using mobiles – often the safest way LGBT can contact us when they need to talk through domestic violence issues -  to speak to us at a cheaper more transparent rate. Calls to 03 numbers cost no more than a national rate call to an 01 or 02 number and must count towards any inclusive minutes in the same way as 01 and 02 calls. These rules apply to calls from any type of line including mobile, BT, other fixed line or payphone.)
